The first few minutes of “Blitz” are stunning
Story
Follow the stories of a group of Londoners during the bombing of the British capital during World War II. Saoirse Ronan and Harris Dickinson previously starred together in the film Watch Them Run (2022). From the very beginning, Steve McQueen throws you into hell. The first wall shows how the house is burning, the firefighters are asking to do everything they can, one of them is injured, the others are fighting the wall of fire and noise.
This is the “Blitz”, the bombing of London during the Second World War
The camera is right in the middle of the chaos, capturing it in raw and sometimes out-of-focus images, and you can almost feel the heat of the flames. McQueen shows the horrors of war from the point of view of Rita, a single mother living with her son George and father in a working-class neighborhood. For his own safety, she sends her little son to the village, but he does not want to go and refuses to say goodbye at the train station. George jumps out of the slow-moving train, finds his way back to London, but on the way home all kinds of obstacles delay a happy reunion with his mother.
McQueen regularly switches between George’s adventures and Rita’s desperate search efforts
In both parallel stories, the blitz is shown in all its horrors. Bombed streets, constant fear, shelters in subway stations, women working in munitions factories, live BBC broadcasts to keep the spirits up. McQueen adds an additional layer by showing racism in British society, which at the time was convinced of its own superiority. There is much to enjoy from a cinematic point of view.
This is clearly a big-budget film, and it shows
Beautiful tracking shots, original camera angles and some impressive aerial shots of burning London. One very beautiful wall begins with a display of abstract moving dots, slowly turning into moon waves, which are the background for German bombers flying over the North Sea. It’s also a film that has a lot to offer: an exciting story, an exciting war, lots of excitement, nostalgic songs, and a mother-child theme that everyone can relate to. And also one amazing member of the cast: Paul Weller plays Rita’s father.
Not everything is perfect
There are moments that lack subtlety, and from time to time McQueen is clearly aiming for the tear ducts. But to show how London suffered during the Blitzkrieg, the film is definitely worth watching.
